Chanting ‘OM’

Did You Know? Om Is More Than A Sound.

In the wisdom of Advaita Vedānta, OM is not merely a vibration to be heard—it is a sacred symbol and contemplative means pointing towards Ātman, the Self, and Brahman, the Absolute Reality.

The Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad declares:

“OM is all this.”

It presents OM as encompassing the entire field of experience and ultimately points beyond all changing states to Turīya—the peaceful, auspicious, non-dual reality that is the true Self.

When OM is chanted with awareness, the practice can become a powerful means of gathering the mind, cultivating inner quietude, and turning attention inward.

But its deepest purpose is not merely to make us feel calm.

It is to awaken us to what we truly are.

You are not merely the restless thoughts passing through the mind.

You are not merely the changing emotions, circumstances, successes, or failures of life.

Behind every changing experience is the unchanging awareness in which

it is known.

Therefore, let OM become more than a sound on your lips.

Let it become a reminder to return to stillness.

A reminder to rise above fear.

A reminder to transcend limitation.

A reminder to know the Self.

Chant with attention.

Live with courage.

Act with clarity.

And turn inward —not to escape life, but to discover the limitless Self

within.

Key Takeaway

When the mind becomes quiet, do not merely enjoy the silence.

Ask: Who is aware of this silence?

That inquiry is the beginning of true Self-knowledge.
